37. SURAH AL-SAAFFAAT
(THE MAKERS OF ROWS)
(This Surah is Makkan, containing
182 verses and 5 sections)
Allah’s Name to commence
with, the Most Gracious, the
Most Merciful.
$7:1. By the oath of those who
arrange themselves in proper
rows.
37:2. And then by those who
drive by scolding.
37:3. And by those groups who
read the Qur’aan.
37:4. Indeed, your God is
definitely One.
37:5. The Owner of the heavens
and the earth and whatever is
between them, and the Owners
of the Easts (i.e. every point of
the sun’s rising).
37:6. We have indeed adorned
the lowest sky with the
decoration of stars.
37:7. And in order to protect it
from every rebellious devil.
37:8. They (the devils) cannot
listen to the exalted realm (of
the angels), and they are pelted
from every side.
37:9. To chase them away, and
for them is a never-ending
punishment.
37:10. Except the one who
sometimes snatches a part (of
the speech of the angels); so, a
shining flame (i.e. a shooting
star) goes after him.
37:11. Therefore (O Beloved),
ask them, ‘Is their creation
harder or Our other creation
like the heavens, and the
angels, etc.?’ Indeed, We have
created them from sticky clay.
(Then how would it be difficult
to recreate them?)
37:12. Rather, you are surprised
(due to them denying
resurrection), and they are
mocking (you).
37:13. And when they are
advised, they do _ not
understand (the advice).
37:14. And when they see any
sign, they mock (it).
37:15. And they say, ‘This is
nothing but clear magic.’
37:16. ‘When we are dead and
have turned into dust and
bones, will we definitely be
raised again?!
37:17. ‘And also our former
forefathers?’
37:18. Say you (O Beloved),
‘Yes, while you will be
disgraced,
37:19. So, that (i.e. the second
blowing of the Trumpet) is just
a single shout, thereupon they
will begin to see.
37:20. And they will say, ‘Woe
upon us!’ It will be said to
them, ‘This is the Day of
justice.’
37:21. ‘This is the Day of
Judgment, which you used to
37:22. ‘All the unjust people and
their associates, and whatever
they used to worship.
37:23. ‘Instead of Allah. Drive
all of them to the path of Hell.’
37:24. ‘And stop them; they are
to be questioned.
37:25. ‘What has happened to
you, why you do not help one
another?”
37:26. Rather, this Day they
have all surrendered.
37:27, And one of them faced
the other questioning each
other.
37:28. They said, ‘It is you who
used to come to us from our
right side, in order to mislead.’
37:29, They will respond, ‘You
did not have faith yourselves.’
37:30. ‘And we did not have
any control over you; rather,
you were rebellious people
yourselves.’
37:31. So, the Word of our Lord
has proven. true against us, we
will surely have to taste (the
punishment).
37:32. ‘We therefore led you
astray, because we ourselves
were astray.’
37:33. So, on that Day, they are
all partners in punishment.
37:34, This is how We deal with
the culprits.
37:35. Indeed, whenever it was
said to them; that ‘There is no
one worthy of worship except
Allah,’ so, they would become
arrogant.
37:36. And they would say,
‘Shall we abandon our gods
upon the sayings of a mad
37:37. (He is not a mad poet)
rather, he has brought the
truth, and he has attested the
(previous) Messengers.
37:38. ‘Indeed, you definitely
have to taste the painful
punishment.’
37:39. ‘And you will not be
compensated except for your
doings.’
37:40. Except the chosen
bondsmen of Allah.
37:41. For them is such
sustenance, which is in Our
knowledge.
37:42. Fruits; and they will be
honoured.
37:43. In Gardens of peace.
37:44. They will be on the
thrones, face to face.
37:45. There will be rounds of
cups of (pure) flowing wine for
them, in front of the eyes.
37:46. White in colour, delicious
for the drinkers.
37:47. Wherein there is no
intoxication nor spinning of
their head with it (ie. no
hangover).
37:48. And with them are those
(maidens) who will not set their
gaze anywhere else other than
towards their husbands, with
large (gorgeous) eyes.
37:49. As if they were eggs,
safely hidden.
37:50. So, one amongst them (i.e.
the dwellers of Paradise) turns
to the other, while questioning.
37:51. The speaker among them
said, ‘I had a companion.’
37:52. ‘Who used to tell me, “Do
you believe it is true (ie.
resurrection?”’
37:53. ‘‘“When we are dead and
have turned into dust and
bones, so will we be rewarded
or punished?”’
37:54. He said, ‘Will you peep
and take a glimpse (into Hell)?’
37:55. He therefore looked
down and saw him in the
middle of the Blazing Fire.
37:56. He said, ‘By the oath of
Allah, you had nearly ruined
me.’
37:57. ‘And if my Lord does not
bestow (His) Benevolence, I too
would have therefore definitely
been seized and brought forth
(as a prisoner).’
37:58. ‘So, are we never to die.’
37:59. ‘Except our first death,
and we will not be punished?!
37:60. ‘This is certainly the
supreme success.’
37:61. For this kind of success,
doers should work.
37:62. So, is this hospitality
better, or the tree of Zaqqoom
(ie. a horrible bitter tree in Hell)?
37:63. We have indeed made
that (tree) a test for the unjust.
37:64. Indeed, that is a tree
which springs out from the root
of Hell.
37:65. The shoots of its fruits
are like the heads of devils.
37:66. Then indeed, they will
eat from it, then fill their bellies
with it.
37:67. Then indeed, on top of it,
for them is the mixer of boiling
water.
37:68. Then indeed, their return
is towards the Blazing Fire.
37:69. They had indeed found
their forefathers astray.
37:70. So, they hasten to follow
in their footsteps.
37:71. And indeed before them,
many of the former ones went
astray.
37:72. And indeed, We had sent
warners among them.
37:73. Therefore, see what was
the outcome of those who were
warned.
37:74. Except the chosen
bondsmen of Allah.
37:75. And indeed, Nooh called
upon Us, so what an excellent
Answerer (of supplication) We
are.
37:76. And We rescued him and
his family from the great
calamity.
37:77. And We made his
children the only survivors.
37:78. And We kept his praise
amongst the latter generations.
37:79. Peace be upon Nooh,
amongst the creations in the
37:80. Undoubtedly, this is how
We reward the righteous.
37:81. He (Nooh) is indeed one
of Our high ranking, entirely-
believing bondsmen.
37:82. We then drowned the
others.
37:83. And indeed, Ibrahim is
from his group.
37:84. When he _ presented
himself before his Lord, with a
heart free from other than Allah.
37:85. When he (Ibrahim) said
to his father and his people,
“What do you worship?’
37:86. ‘Do you desire a god
other than Allah through
fabrication?’
37:87. ‘So, what is your
perception regarding the Lord
of all the worlds?!
37:88. He then cast a glance at
37:89. He then said, ‘I am going
to get ill.’
37:90. So, they turned their
backs on him and went away
(because they thought he
would transmit the disease).
37:91. He then walked towards
their idols secretly, so he said,
“Do you not eat?!
37:92. ‘What happened to you
that you do not speak?’
37:93. So, he began striking
them with his right hand,
unnoticed by the people.
37:94. So, the disbelievers came
towards him in haste.
37:95. He said, ‘Do you worship
that which you yourselves have
carved with your own hands?’
37:96. ‘Whereas, Allah has
created you and your actions.’
37:97. They said, ‘Construct a
building (i.e. a furnace) for him,
and then cast him in the
Blazing Fire.’
37:98. So, they tried to execute
their evil scheme upon him, We
humiliated them.
37:99. And he said, ‘Indeed, I
am going to go to my Lord, He
will now guide me.’
37:100. ‘0 My Lord, bestow
upon me righteous offspring.’
37:101. We henceforth gave him
the glad tidings of an intelligent
boy.
37:102. And when he became
capable of working with him,
(Ibrahim) said, ‘0 my son! I
dreamt that I am sacrificing
you, now see what is your
opinion?’ (The son) said, ‘O my
father! Do what you are being
commanded; Allah willing, it is
soon that you will find me
patient.’
37:103. So, when they both
submitted to Our command, and
the father laid down his son by
his forehead; do not ask about
that (astonishing) situation.
37:104. And We called out to
him; that ‘O Ibrahim.’
37:105. ‘You have indeed made
the dream come true.’ And this
is how We reward the virtuous.
37:106. Indeed, this was a clear
test.
37:107. And We rescued him
(Isma’eel) in exchange for a
great sacrifice.
37:108. And We kept his praise
amongst the latter generations.
37:109. Peace be upon Ibrahim.
37:110. This is how We reward
the virtuous.
37:111. He is indeed one of Our
high ranking, entirely-believing
bondsmen.
37112 And We gave him the
glad tidings of Is-haaq, that (he
will be a) conveyor of the unseen
news, a Prophet, from amongst
those who deserve Our proximity.
37:113. And We sent blessings
upon him and Is-haaq; and
amongst their children, one
who does good deeds, and one
clearly wrongs himself.
37:114. And We indeed did a
great favour upon Moosa and
Haaroon.
37:115. And rescued them and
their nation from the great
distress.
37:116. And We helped them,
so they became victorious.
37:117. And We bestowed the
Luminous Book (ie. the
Tawrah) to both of them.
37:118. And showed them the
Straight Path.
37:119. And We kept their
praise amongst the latter
generations.
37:120. Peace be upon Moosa
37:121. This is how We reward
the virtuous.
37:122. Indeed, they both are
amongst Our high ranking,
entirely-believing bondsmen.
37:123. And indeed, Ilyaas is of
the Messengers.
37:124. When he said to his
nation, ‘Do you not fear?’
37:125. ‘Do you worship Ba’l
(an idol) and leave the Best
Creator?’
37:126. ‘Allah, Who is your
Lord and the Lord of your
former forefathers.’
37:127. Thereafter they belied
him, so they will definitely be
seized.
37:128. Except the chosen
bondsmen of Allah.
37:129. And We kept his praise
amongst the latter generations.
37:131. This is how We reward
the virtuous.
37:132. He is indeed one of Our
high ranking, entirely-believing
bondsmen.
37:133. And indeed, Loot is of
the Messengers.
37:134. When We rescued him
and his entire family.
37:135. Except an old woman,
who became amongst those
who stayed behind.
37:136. We then destroyed the
others.
37:137. And indeed, you (O
disbelievers of Makkah) pass
over them (ie. over their
deserted houses) in the
morning (when you travel).
37:138. And during the night
(also pass therefrom), so do you
not have sense?
37:139. And indeed, Yunus is of
the Messengers.
37:140. When he left towards
the loaded ship.
37:141. So, he drew lots (as to
who should be thrown into the
sea), he therefore became
amongst those who were
pushed (into the sea).
37:142. The fish then swallowed
him and he was blaming
himself.
37:143. And had he not been of
those who glorify (Allah).
37:144. He would have definitely
remained in its belly till the day
when the people will be raised.
37:145. Then We cast him on
the shore (out of the whale’s
belly) and he was ill.
37:146. And We grew a tree of
gourd (as a miraculous shelter)
37:147. And We sent him
towards a hundred thousand
people, rather more.
37:148. So they believed, We
henceforth gave them benefit
(ie. enjoyment of life) for a
while.
37:149. Therefore ask them (O
Beloved), whether the
daughters are for your Lord
and the sons for them?
37:150. Or that have We created
the angels as females, and were
they present (at the time of
their creation)?
37:151. Pay heed! Indeed, they
say (this) out of their
fabrication.
37152. That ‘Allah has
offspring.’ And indeed, they are
definitely liars.
37:153. Has He _ chosen
daughters instead of sons?
37:154, What is the matter with
you? What sort of judgement
do you give?
37:155. So, do you not ponder
(that Allah is free from wives
and children)?
37:156. Or do you have some
clear proof?
$7:157. Then bring your book, if
you are truthful.
37:158. And they have appointed
kinship between Him and the
Jinn; and indeed, the Jinn most
definitely know that they (who
made such claims) will definitely
be brought (to be put into Hell).
37:159. Purity is to Allah from
the matters they relate.
37:160. Except the chosen
bondsmen of Allah.
37:161. Therefore, you and all
what you worship other than
Allah.
37:162. (All of) you cannot
mislead anyone against Him.
37:163. Except the one who is
going into the Blazing Fire.
37:164. And the angels say, ‘Each
one of us has a known station.’
37:165. ‘And indeed, we, with
our wings spread, await the
command.’
37:166. ‘And indeed, we are
those who glorify Him.’
37:167. And indeed they (ie.
the disbelievers) used to say
(before the arrival of the
Beloved Prophet Muhammad).
37:168. ‘If we had some advice
(ie. a Book) like that of the
earlier generations.’
37:169. ‘Then (by practicing it),
we would surely have been the
chosen bondsmen of Allah.’
37:170. So they denied it (ie.
the Qur’aan), therefore they
will soon come to know (of
their bad outcome).
37:171. And indeed, Our Word
has already been decreed for
Our bondsmen who were sent
(i.e. the Prophets).
37:172. That undoubtedly, only
they will be helped.
$7:173. And indeed, only Our
army will become dominant.
37:174. Therefore, turn away
from them for some time.
37:175. And keep watching
them; they will soon see (their
bad outcome).
37:176. So, are they in haste for
Our punishment?
37:177. Then when it will
descend in their courtyards, so
what an evil morning it will be
for those who were warned.
37:178. And turn away from
them for some time.
37:179. And wait; they will
soon see (their bad outcome).
37:180. Purity is to your Lord,
the Lord of Honour, from all
what they falsely attribute
37:181. And peace be upon the
Messengers.
37:182. And all praise is due to
Allah Who is the Lord of all the
worlds.
