11. SURAH HOOD (THE PROPHET
HOOD)

Surah Hood (The Prophet Hood) – Makkan, 123 verses, 10 sections.

11:1 Alif-Laam-Ra. This is a Book with wise verses, explained clearly by the Wise, the All-Aware.
11:2 Do not worship anyone but Allah; I am a Warner and Giver of glad tidings from Him.
11:3 Seek forgiveness from your Lord and repent; He will provide you a good life and His grace, but if you turn away, I fear punishment for you on the Great Day.
11:4 To Allah is your return, and He has power over everything.
11:5 They (hypocrites) conceal themselves, but Allah knows what they hide and disclose, even what’s in their hearts.

11:6 Every living being’s sustenance is upon Allah; He knows where they will reside and rest, everything is recorded in a manifest Book.
11:7 Allah created the heavens and earth in six days, and His Throne was upon water, to test whose deeds are best. Disbelievers call resurrection after death “clear magic.”
11:8 If We delay the punishment, they mock and ask why. When it comes, they cannot avert it, and the punishment they mocked will surround them.
11:9-10 When Allah’s mercy is withdrawn, man despairs, and when blessings follow hardship, man boasts, forgetting past trials.

11:11 Except for those who are patient and do good deeds, for them is forgiveness and a great reward.
11:12 Will you (O Prophet) be troubled by their claims that no treasure or angel came with you? You are only a Warner, and Allah is the Guardian over everything.
11:13-14 Do they claim you fabricated the Qur’an? Challenge them to bring ten chapters like it, and call upon anyone they wish besides Allah. If they cannot, know that this is from Allah, and there is no one worthy of worship except Him.
11:15 Those who desire worldly gains will be fully rewarded in this life, without reduction.
11:16 Those seeking worldly gains will have nothing in the Hereafter but Fire; their deeds will be nullified.
11:17 Is a disbeliever equal to one who is upon clear proof from their Lord, with the Qur’an as a witness, and before it, the Book of Moses? Only the true believers accept it, and for those who deny, the Fire is promised. Do not doubt it, for it is the truth from your Lord.
11:18 Who is more unjust than one who lies against Allah? They will face their Lord’s court, and witnesses will testify against them.
11:19-20 These are the ones who prevent people from Allah’s path, seeking to deviate others, disbelieving in the Hereafter. They will not escape punishment, and they have no helpers besides Allah.
11:21-22 They lose their souls and are the greatest losers in the Hereafter.
11:23 But those who believe, do good deeds, and turn to their Lord, will dwell in Paradise forever.
11:24 The believers and disbelievers are like the seeing and the blind; are they equal? Will you not take heed?

11:25-26 We sent Noah to his people as a clear Warner, saying, “Worship only Allah; I fear the punishment of the dreadful Day upon you.”
11:27 The disbelieving chiefs said, “You are just a man like us, followed only by the lowest among us without thinking deeply. We see no superiority in you and think you’re a liar.”
11:28 Noah responded, “If I am upon clear proof from my Lord, and He has bestowed mercy upon me, but you remain blind to it, can I force you to accept it if you dislike it?”
11:29 He added, “I do not ask for wealth from you; my reward is from Allah. I will not drive away the believers; they will meet their Lord, but I see you as ignorant people.”
11:30 “And who would protect me from Allah if I repelled them? Will you not take heed?”

11:31 Noah said, “I don’t claim to have Allah’s treasures, nor do I know the unseen or say I am an angel. I cannot judge whom Allah will bless; He knows their hearts.”
11:32 They said, “Noah, you’ve argued enough. Bring us the punishment if you are truthful.”
11:33 Noah replied, “Allah will bring it when He wills, and you cannot prevent it.”
11:34 “My advice won’t benefit you if Allah wills you to go astray; you will return to Him.”
11:35 They accused Noah of fabricating the message, and Allah said to tell them, “If I’ve fabricated it, the sin is on me.”
11:36 Allah revealed to Noah that no one else from his people would believe, so he should not grieve for them.
11:37 Allah commanded Noah to build the Ark and not plead for the unjust, for they will be drowned.

11:38 Noah built the Ark, and the chiefs mocked him. He replied, “If you mock us, we will mock you when the punishment comes.”
11:39 “Soon you will know who will be disgraced and who will face lasting punishment.”
11:40 When the command came and the oven gushed forth, Allah said to board the Ark with pairs of animals, Noah’s family, and the believers, except those destined for punishment.
11:41 Noah said, “Board it in the name of Allah, for its sailing and anchoring are by Him.”
11:42 As the Ark sailed on waves like mountains, Noah called to his son, “Join us, and don’t be with the disbelievers.”
11:43 His son replied, “I will seek refuge on a mountain.” Noah warned, “Nothing can save you today except Allah’s mercy.” A wave separated them, and his son drowned.
11:44 Allah commanded the earth to swallow the water, and the Ark rested on Mount Joodi. It was said, “Away with the unjust.”

11:45 Noah prayed, “O my Lord, my son is from my family, and Your promise is true.”
11:46 Allah replied, “He is not of your family; his deeds are despicable. Do not ask Me about what you don’t know.”
11:47 Noah sought forgiveness from Allah, acknowledging his error.
11:48 Allah told Noah to disembark with peace and blessings upon him and his followers, though some will face punishment later.

11:49 These are unseen news revealed to you, O Prophet, which you didn’t know before. Be patient, for the pious will have a good end.
11:50 To the people of ‘Aad, their prophet Hud said, “Worship Allah; there is none worthy of worship but Him. You are fabricators.”
11:51 Hud added, “I do not ask for payment; my reward is from the One who created me. Don’t you understand?”
11:52 Hud said, “O my people, seek forgiveness from your Lord and repent to Him; He will send abundant rain and add strength to your strength. Don’t turn away committing crimes.”
11:53 They replied, “Hud, you haven’t brought any proof, and we won’t abandon our deities just because of your words, nor believe in you.”
11:54 “We think one of our gods has afflicted you with evil.” Hud responded, “I make Allah my witness, and you too, that I reject those you associate with Him.”
11:55 “So, scheme against me if you wish, without giving me respite.”
11:56 “I rely on Allah, my Lord and your Lord. There is no creature whose forelock is not in His control. Indeed, my Lord is on the Straight Path.”
11:57 “If you turn away, I have conveyed the message to you. My Lord will replace you with others, and you cannot harm Him. He is the Guardian over all things.”

11:58 When the punishment came, We rescued Hud and those who believed with him through Our mercy, saving them from severe punishment.
11:59 The people of ‘Aad rejected their Lord’s signs, disobeyed the messengers, and followed the command of tyrants.
11:60 They were cursed in this world and will be cursed on the Day of Resurrection. ‘Aad denied their Lord—away with the people of Hud!

11:61 To the people of Thamood, We sent their brother Saalih. He said, “O my people, worship Allah; you have no god but Him. He created you from the earth and settled you on it. Seek forgiveness and repent to Him, for my Lord is Near, Responsive to prayers.”
11:62 They said, “O Saalih, you were highly regarded among us before this. Do you now forbid us from worshiping the gods of our forefathers? We are doubtful about what you’re calling us to.”

11:63 Saalih said, “O my people, if I am upon clear proof from my Lord, and He has granted me mercy, who can save me from Him if I disobey? You would only increase my loss.”
11:64 “O my people, this she-camel is a sign from Allah; let her graze freely on Allah’s land and do not harm her, or a near punishment will befall you.”
11:65 But they hamstrung her. Saalih warned them, “Enjoy yourselves for three more days in your homes, this promise will not be false.”
11:66 When Our punishment came, We saved Saalih and the believers by Our mercy and saved them from the disgrace of that day. Indeed, your Lord is Mighty, Honorable.
11:67 The terrible cry seized the wrongdoers, and by morning they were lying lifeless in their homes.
11:68 As if they had never lived there. Indeed, Thamood disbelieved in their Lord. Cursed be Thamood!

11:69 Our angels came to Ibrahim with glad tidings and greeted him with peace. He returned the greeting and brought them a roasted calf.
11:70 When he saw they did not touch the food, he grew suspicious. But they said, “Do not be afraid, we are sent to the people of Lot.”
11:71 His wife was standing by, and she laughed. We gave her glad tidings of Ishaq, and after him, Ya’qub.
11:72 She exclaimed, “How can I bear a child in my old age, and my husband is also old? This is strange!”
11:73 The angels replied, “Are you amazed at Allah’s command? His mercy and blessings are upon you, O people of this house! Indeed, He is Praiseworthy, Glorious.”

11:74 When Ibrahim’s fear was gone, and the good news came to him, he began to argue for the people of Lot.
11:75 Indeed, Ibrahim was forbearing, tender-hearted, and often repentant.
11:76 The angels said, “O Ibrahim, stop! The command of your Lord has already been given, and punishment will indeed come to them, which cannot be averted.”

11:77 When Our angels came to Lot, he was distressed and said, “This is a difficult day.”
11:78 The people came rushing towards him with their immoral desires. Lot said, “O my people, here are my daughters (for marriage), they are purer for you. Fear Allah, and do not disgrace me in front of my guests. Is there not a righteous man among you?”
11:79 They replied, “You know we have no desire for your daughters, you know what we want.”
11:80 Lot said, “If only I had power against you or could find strong support!”
11:81 The angels said, “O Lot, we are messengers from your Lord. They cannot harm you. Leave with your family during the night and do not look back, except for your wife—she will face the same fate as them. Their punishment will come in the morning. Isn’t the morning near?”

11:82 When Our command came, We turned their town upside down and rained upon them stones of hard clay.

11:83 Those stones are in the custody of your Lord, marked, and they are not far from the unjust.
11:84 To Madyan, Shu’ayb was sent. He said, “O my people, worship Allah; there is no deity worthy of worship but Him. Do not short-change in measure and weight. I see you prosperous, but I fear the punishment of the encompassing Day upon you.”
11:85 “Measure and weigh with justice, and do not defraud others. The remainder from Allah is better for you if you believe.”
11:86 “I am not a guardian over you.”
11:87 They said, “Does your prayer command us to forsake the deities of our forefathers and not do as we wish with our wealth? You think you are wise!”
11:88 He replied, “If I am on clear proof from my Lord, and He has blessed me, I do not intend to act against what I forbid you. My aim is to reform you. My support is only from Allah.”
11:89 “O my people, do not let your resentment towards me lead you to punishment like that which befell the people of Nooh, Hood, or Saalih; the people of Lot are not far from you.”
11:90 “Seek forgiveness from your Lord and turn to Him; indeed, He is Most Merciful.”
11:91 They said, “We do not understand much of what you say. You are weak among us, and if it weren’t for your tribe, we would stone you.”
11:92 He said, “Is my tribe’s power greater than Allah’s? You have disregarded Him. Whatever you do is under His control.”
11:93 “Continue your work; I will continue mine. Soon you will know upon whom the punishment will fall.”
11:94 When Our command came, We rescued Shu’ayb and the believers with him. The unjust were struck down, lying lifeless.
11:95 As if they had never lived there. Cursed be Madyan, as Thamood was cursed!
11:96 We sent Moosa with Our signs and clear authority.
11:97 He went to Fir’awn and his nobles, but they followed Fir’awn’s commands.
11:98 Fir’awn will lead his people on the Day of Resurrection to Hell, a wretched destination.
11:99 They faced a curse in this world and on the Day of Resurrection; what a wretched reward!
11:100 These are the stories of the towns We relate to you, some are still standing, others have disappeared.
11:101 We did not oppress them; they wronged themselves. Their deities did not help them when your Lord’s punishment came.
11:102 Such is the seizing of your Lord when He seizes towns for their injustice; indeed, His seizing is painful and severe.
11:103 In this is a sign for those who fear the punishment of the Hereafter; it is the Day of Gathering.

Here’s a condensed version of Surah Hood (verses 104-123):

11:104 We do not postpone punishment except for a calculated time.
11:105 On that Day, no one will speak without Allah’s permission; some will be unfortunate, others fortunate.
11:106 The unfortunate will be in Hell, braying like donkeys.
11:107 They will remain there as long as the heavens and the earth endure, unless Allah wills otherwise.
11:108 The fortunate will be in Paradise, abiding forever, except as Allah wills.
11:109 Do not be deceived by the worship of disbelievers; they worship as their forefathers did, and they will receive their due without diminishment.
11:110 We gave Moosa the Book, leading to conflict; had it not been for Allah’s decree, the matter would have been settled.
11:111 Allah will repay everyone for their actions; He knows their deeds.
11:112 So remain firm as commanded, and do not rebel. Allah is observing your deeds.
11:113 Do not lean towards the unjust, lest the Fire touch you; you have no supporter except Allah.
11:114 Establish Salah at the two ends of the day and parts of the night; good deeds erase evil deeds.
11:115 Be patient; Allah does not waste the reward of the righteous.
11:116 Why were there not righteous people among past generations to prevent turmoil? Only a few were rescued; the unjust pursued luxury.
11:117 Allah does not destroy towns unjustly while their people are righteous.
11:118 If Allah had willed, all mankind would be one nation; conflict will always remain.
11:119 Except for those on whom Allah has mercy; He created them to distinguish between disputers and peacemakers.
11:120 We relate these stories to strengthen your heart and provide truth for the Muslims.
11:121 Say to the disbelievers, “Continue your work; we will continue ours.”
11:122 “And wait; we are waiting too.”
11:123 Only Allah knows the unseen of the heavens and the earth; all matters will return to Him. Worship Him and trust Him; your Lord is aware of your actions.
